August 5, 2003 Afternoon

Getting to Wood's hole was a bit of a dream come true! When Jen and Barry asked if anyone wanted to come along, I jumped at the chance! While we walk the streets, the others are taking in the touristy things. But I am sensing something else in the air, some awakening of old yearnings. I gaze at the buildings with longing. MBL... WHOI... NOAA... I want to be a part of what is going on inside...

At the NOAA Aquarium I watch the interns and am instantly transported back in time: I was 16 years old and I'd fallen in love with Marine Biology... This was a bit difficult as I lived in upstate NY and nowhere near the shore! There was no intern program available for me then, only my persistent pleas with my Advanced Biology teacher to let me learn about fish instead of mammals. During the summer when I turned 17, I realized that I had to make a choice... Marine Biology? Forensics? Medicine? I chose the latter...

And here I am... 49 years old and rekindling the dreams of my youth. Just being here quickens my heart! I feel the tempo of the researchers working in the lab, the excitement of the teams exploring new depths of the sea, the enthusiasm of those young interns doing those small jobs that keeps everything else going... And the subtle pulse of the many heartbeats that live in the sea...

If given the opportunity, would I turn back time to make this dream a reality? In a New York Minute !!!!
